(What I'm doing.
Now I'm done with the drawing project I been doing recently! I've been meaning to keep it a little half secret until the publisher has had their say, but I still want to tell you a bit: I'm about to make a children's book! or rather, I've drawn sketches and hope very much that the publishers I've talked to will think it is an idea worth trying. As I've told you before, I also make children's music (which you can listen to here if you want to), and my thought is that the book I'm doing also shall include a cd with music. Tomorrow I will go to a printing office and copy my originals, and on Wednesday I will go to the publisher so they can have look at them. I know it's hard to get publishers to like book ideas, but I'm so glad that I'm doing this. I have thought for so long that I would like to, and now I'm doing it. Whatever happens, it's a great feeling to dare to try. To see if it's possible. And anyway it's nice to draw.)

Bokprat: Pojkarna.

(Book-talk: Pojkarna.
I just read Pojkarna ('The boys') by Jessica Schiefauer. I've been wanting to read it for a while after it won the August Prize last year, in the category of best book for young adults. I got even more eager to read it when I heard that it would contain magic in a greenhouse! The first part of the book was really magical. Three girls get an amazing flower, whose juice they taste in a masquerade party. The juice makes them turn into boys at night, and they experience the adventure in no longer having to be girls with all that implies. The other boys' looks are no longer uncomfortable and sticky, and the girls have room to relax and explore new venues that were previously not available. I think the plot is really good, and the issues are both interesting and refreshing standard critical.

Later, something happens that unfortunately is very common in contemporary young adult literature: it goes very, very bad. The book is still coherent, and there is nothing wrong with the credibility of the existential crisis that leads to the bad things, nor the tension that makes you breathlessly turning every single page until the end. However, I would want those bad things not to be there. I wish there could be a book about how it bolts and bursts in a teenager's body and in a young heart without having it go so bad. I found that the most magical part of Pojkarna was before the girls turned into boys, when they sewed costumes and performed sisterhood rituals and was sugar-fueled on cookies in the lush garden and laughed their way through warm bright summer nights. I'd like to read more about that. It was so nice to read that part. That beautiful drone of girls' dreams and magic that hovered around them even before they turned into boys. That beautiful garden where no boys had access.

Despite the bad, I think Pojkarna is a nice and readable book. I recommend it and would be happy to discuss it if someone would fancy that!

(At least not as hysterical as a fillyjonk.
What a stressful week I've had! no peace and no rest, just running running running between school, work, and a now emptied and cleaned apartment. Phu! it's nice that it's done, now I can take it easy again. Almost every time I'm stressed, I start to think of Mrs Fillyjonk in Moomin Valley. If my stress level is a seven in its highest point, Mrs Fillyjonk's daily average is perhaps eleven. For example, when I would shrug my shoulders at the dirty windows in November, Mrs Fillyjonk becomes hysterical with the thought of dirty windows, and throws herself out of the window with the risk of her life, to climb up to the roof to wash the attic windows from the outside. I think it's nice to have Mrs Fillyjonk. When I feel hysterical, there's a little lady in a red dress out there that are more hysterical. It's a nice thought. Today I bought a keychain with an angry little Mrs Fillyjonk on. It makes me remember to take it easy. For how stressed out I ever get, I will at least never be as hysterical as a fillyjonk.

Isn't the second image nice? it is taken from Tales from Moominvalley (in Swedish: The Invisible Child), an amazing collection of histories. For those who long to revel down more in the thoughts of Mrs Fillyjonk, I can also highly recommend Moominvalley in November, both by author Tove Jansson.)

Supertanten.

(I've read such a wonderful book this week: Supertanten ("The super aunt") by Elin Ek. This is a warm declaration of love to all the old ladies out there, a glimpse of the aunties' mentality and way of life. The productivity of the old ladies is hailed with recipes for juices, jams and pastries, sweets and traditional cooking. Aunt facts and portraits of famous ladies are interspersed with pictures of china and crocheted tablecloths, and descriptions of handiwork to do by yourself. There are even designs and descriptions for those who want to sew their own aunt-outfit! I got very fond of this book, perhaps because I have quite a few lady moves myself (in the book there's also a lady-quiz where you can see exactly how much of an old lady you are!), but also because it is made with so much love. You old ladies, the source of the rosy grandchildhood memories of sweet bowls and raspberry patches, this book is for you. But it is also for the rest of us who wish to once be like you: juiceing, preserving, constantly baking, kind and soap-smelling.)

Ända in i hjärterötterna. Sirius Black, jag saknar dig.

(Hommage to my favorite character.
Finally, yesterday it was time to deal with the thing I have put off for quite some time now. I had once again come to the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The End, though it is only the end of book five out of seven, yet is the End with a capital E. The End, where the best character dies. I knew it would happen, I have read the book several times before, I have discussed it with others into infinity, in my teens I even both drew portraits and wrote songs dedicated to this character. And to top it all, I now write a thesis in literature about him. It should come as no surprise that he dies, when I've based half my essay on the function of his death. It shouldn't be so heartbreaking when I've read it before. It shouldn't feel so much when I know it was coming. But it does. And I'm crying.

I cry so much that the book gets wet, I cry so much I cause myself a headache, I cry so much that my boyfriend starts laughing at me crying so much for a book's sake. But it's not just a book. It's not just a character. It is a friend. And when he became Harry's godfather, he was in some ways kind of my godfather too. When he was sad I was sad. When he was happy, I was happy. When he laughed and it sounded like a dog barking it made my heart trickle with joy. I have read books from various shelves, but few characters have ever felt so real to me, few have ever come this close. And that's why it feels so much when he dies. Every time. I read a letter to the letters column about a person who mourned her cat, and who felt that the environment did not really understand the extent of her loss. I understand. I mourn a literary character. Maybe my grief is even harder to understand, since the man I mourn technically isn't for real. But it still feels. Right into the roots of my heart. Sirius Black, I miss you.

Uppsats.

(I have so much fun to do these days! I'm writing thesis (is it called that? an big essay that takes a bit more than half a term), which in itself may sound scary, but in this case it's just fun. And that is because I write a literature essay about Sirius Black in Harry Potter! Can it possibly get any better!? my idea about the essay is to make a character portrait of Sirius and discuss his role in the books. I been severly caught since I read the books for the first time, so now I'm really very happy with the situation. The rest of the semester is devoted exclusively to Sirius Black, how nice isn't that? I read the books, put bookmarks at important pages and write notes, read specialist literature on theories (at the library, there was an entire shelf of books written about Harry Potter, how cool is that?), and making theories up on my own. It's amazing. Are there many Potterheads out there?)

- The Carrie Diaries av Candace Bushnell

(This week I've read these three books:
- Knappt lovlig ('Barely lawful') by Katarina von Bredow
- Älskade pelargoner ('Beloved geraniums') by Veronica Wägner
- The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell)

(Knappt lovlig, ('Barely lawful') is about a fifteen year old girl from the city who moves to the country with her family. Once there, a clash occurs between her own and her friends' prejudices and her burgeoning feelings for the handsome young pig farmer neighbor.

I have previously expressed my praise to Katarina von Bredows books, and I stick to it. This was not the best or the weakest card in her deck, but it was nice. I liked that it took place in the country and that it offered such sympathetic descriptions of the dream guy. Some threads felt a little too hastily tied together, that was a pity. After reading some books by von Bredow you start to feel that the plot and the construction is similar in several of them. Nothing wrong with that when you like the concept, but I would like sequels so you get to know what happened next!)

(The second book I've read is called Älskade pelargon, en samlares anteckningar ('Beloved geraniums, a collector's notes') and is written by Veronica Wägner. This is a wonderfully inspiring book full of anecdotes and stories about how the author became interested in geraniums and what made her create a large collection. Different varieties of geraniums are described, and there are several old family stories from different places in which the geranium played a central role. I like this kind of book a lot. There are flowers, there are nice stories, there is humor, and there are very beautiful geranium photographs. I own only one geranium (yet!), but I was still blown away by this book. Recommended as summer reading!)

(There are many large beautiful pictures in this book. Nice to rest your eyes on.)

(Finally, I've also read The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell. I really like the TV series Sex and the City, that was probably what made me pick me this book when I saw it at the library. This is Carrie's diary from her last year of high school, and it's about what made her to start writing and why she came to New York in the first place.

I guess you can not expect too much of this kind of book. It's tricky with books that become movies, and perhaps even trickier when the book becomes an praised television series that interprets the contents in its own way, and chooses different paths than the author. Everything in the book is not quite right with the TV series, which I felt was very disturbing at first. For example, in the book Carrie lives with her father and her two sisters. During the six seasons of the show not even a shred of a sister is mentioned, and the father left little Carrie and her mother when Carrie was only a few years old (which they also built an entire episode on!). Well. When you've read for a while and somewhat manage to free yourself from the TV show in the back of your mind, the book is quite entertaining. It's a pretty normal high school story with friends and enemies and misunderstandings and boys, and it is told in a
believable way. It's okay.

If the author wrote The Carrie Diaries because she likes Carrie and want to tell more of her story, this book works out just fine. However, if the intention is to make money on the empire of the television series, I do not think the mission is
accomplished particularly well. There are too many differences to make a really nice recognition factor. It will be interesting to read the Sex and the City book, it also stands in my bookcase with library books, and see how it relates to The Carrie Diaries. I will return on that!)

Under täcket.

(Speaking of nice wrappings, this sweet gift I found under the covers when I went to bed on the birthday night. The paper is one of Grandma's old if I remember correctly, isn't it nice? It was mom who had got hold of a copy of The story of a country house, my absolute favorite book that I've read a thousand times but never owned. I'm so happy! It will be oh so nice to read it again. And this time with a pencil in my hand, ready to make comments for future generations.)

(When I was at my grandmother's I took the opportunity to scout around a bit in my grandfather's old bookshelves. I love when people have written names and dates in their books, maybe I should start doing that aswell. The best thing was to find the signatures of my grandfather and great grandfather and see how nicely they wrote our last name. And that I'm not the only one that studied literature!)
